1. Understand the arrangement
“Rental”, “subscription”, “rent-to-own” and “instalment purchase” can describe different legal and practical arrangements. The advertisement is only a summary. Read the current agreement and ask for unclear terms in writing.

2. Compare total cost over one period
Choose a realistic period—such as the full proposed contract term—and use it for both options. Do not compare five years of rental with only the day-one purchase price.

3. Put a value on servicing
Bundled service may suit a household that does not want to schedule filter changes or find technicians. Check visit frequency, service-area coverage, missed appointments, filter stages included and whether consumables are genuine for the model.
With an outright purchase, the owner may arrange maintenance independently. That freedom is useful only if replacement filters, instructions and competent support remain available.
4. Check flexibility before signing
- Can the appliance be moved to a new address?
- What happens if the new home is outside the service area?
- Can the agreement be ended early, and how is the charge calculated?
- Can the plan be transferred to another person?
- What happens during a long repair?
- Does ownership transfer automatically or only after another payment?
5. Separate the payment decision from the product decision

- Record the full term in months.

- Record ownership and support at the end.
- Compare convenience and flexibility separately from price.
